Lighting is becoming a big topic in the USA. 15 years ago when I joined my first US DVN event in Rochester, presentation were done by German OEMs, European lighting suppliers, and US lighting engineers were listening to speakers. Regulation was frozen, and audience “frustration” was palpable: AFS was not allowed, and LED deployment was really delayed.
Today, this is drastically changing. The vehicle lighting market is similar to Europe ($7-8bn market value), LED penetration is similar to Europe, car body lighting (lit logo, lit grille) is more advanced than Europe due to less legal restriction, and ADB is now coming, boosted by Tesla released last spring on all its fleet by OTA (with pixel and matrix technology). Interior lighting is starting to be on the agenda in USA also, a bit later compared to exterior lighting with a strong volume increase for smart lighting solutions (data below from S&P Mobility keynote).
How can we know this is all true and what I say is not only a marketing / consulting optimistic scenario? My honest feeling is that will happen. Due to geopolitical turbulence, there is a clear willingness to produce local for local. Lighting products are now relocated in USA, this is reality.
DVN USA was the biggest event we have ever done. Bigger than Munich, with 460 participants. This shows the interest in the technology and networking and the need to share knowledge.
This week, we publish our detailed report of DVN Detroit event. Thank you Felipe and Daniel for the big job you did in just a week!
