At the Shanghai auto show, I was intrigued to see that Dongfeng have implemented a miniLED display into the grille of the Voyah Free, priced at around €30,000 including not only the fancy lights but also lidar and a bunch of other equipment. I wanted to know more about the lamps.

According to Dengdengschool, the lamp is produced by Xingyu. It presents a new ‘urban starry sky’ effect with 200 LEDs on three flat PCBs, all integrated into the grille, which is divided into left, centre (with logo) and right sections.

On top of these PCBs, there is a big, thick-wall optical system to create the crystal effect.

Then there’s a painted bezel made with laser ablation technology. With LED 1 × 1 management they can create this shining star effect. The technology is quite simple – no flex board, no miniLEDs, no SPI nor I2C protocol – not expensive, and the effect is really good.
