On the Hands-Off U.S. Tour, Valeo’s specially-equipped car will work with a laser scanner, front-facing camera, and four corner radars that ensure safe lane changing. In partially automated driving mode, the trip with Valeo’s Cruise4U will include stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York, Miami, San Antonio, and San Diego. The vehicle will travel both day and night in real traffic conditions, while, when conditions allow, the driver can decide to either control it manually or monitor as Valeo Cruise4U manages steering.

The Valeo SCALA™ laser scanner is key to the Cruise4U system’s function. It scans ahead and detects vehicles, motorbikes, pedestrians, and static obstacles like trees, parked vehicles, and guard rails, with an extremely high level of accuracy. It works during the day and at night, at low and high road speeds. Using the collected data, the scanner creates a map of the environment allowing it to analyse and anticipate events around the vehicle.
