Hella Slovenia, in coöperation with VW, have developed a distinctive fog lamp for the new Golf with a new high-heat grade of Sabic Ultem polyetherimide (PEI) resin. Targets—which the makers say have been met—include exceptional thermal resistance in a compact space, glare reduction, and partially-metallised reflectors.
Sabic say their Ultem family of amorphous thermoplastic polyetherimide (PEI) resins offers high strength, stiffness and broad chemical resistance. The new high-heat resin grade, AUT210, adds superior elevated thermal resistance with haze onset temperatures of up to 210°C. Moreover, Sabic say the fog lamps made of Ultem AUT210 weigh 30% less than stamped steel and 70% less than die-cast aluminum ones would, contributing to the overall mass reduction of the vehicle.
An added benefit of the innovative fog lamp design is the reduction of unwanted stray light, which can cause glare or light spots on the road.
