Tesla have decided to return a conventional turn signal stalk to the Model 3 in China, where they’re also offering a retrofit for existing Model 3s. This is priced at C¥2,499, which is about USD $350. The signal stalk retrofit is hardwired, and it is the same one available for the new Model Y; it is a simpler version of the older turn signal stalk. The new stalk doesn’t allow the driver to flash the high beams or activate the windshield washer, only to activate the turn signals.

Previously, Tesla removed steering column stalks from the Model 3 two years ago. Buyers, consumer groups, and safety advocates howled in protest, and regulators raised eyebrows. It was another user-interface misstep on Tesla’s part, joining the despised yoke-type steering wheel installed because Elon Musk declared that round wheels are “boring”.
The much-hated pushbutton turn signal controls, which move with the steering wheel, will remain on the Tesla S, X, and Cybertruck.
