This paper looked at the difficult problem of how to protect police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, and other such responders whose work exposes them to severe danger from nearby fast traffic. Many such workers are struck and killed or severely injured every year—and this paper found some possible countermeasures: reduce the intensity of the blue light (blue light is more conspicuous than red at any given intensity, so there’s “room” to lower the blue intensity below the levels at which it disorients drivers) and provide steady white horizontal/downward light so that persons in the vicinity of stopped emergency vehicles are clearly visible to nearby drivers.
