Last week ELS (the Embedded Lighting Systems academic program) put on their annual event with around 100 attendees from more than 15 companies involved in lighting. Progress was described in training, research, and creativity activities, and four interesting lectures were presented on the achievements of the students. Topics included reverse engineering of recent headlamps and rear lamps with proposals for improvements. Associate partners supporting the chair—Bertrandt, Siemens, and Plastic Omnium—also presented their activities.

At the end of the meeting, DVN President Hector Fratty led a round table discussion on light communication for safety and acceptance of autonomous vehicles, with participation of experts from PSA, Renault, AL, Valeo, Cerema, and Vedecom. The discussion centred round the impact of the autonomous vehicle on lighting, AV-specific lighting needs, and how communication by signals can be understood and accepted by everybody everywhere. The main conclusion was the urgent need of a global agreement by the lighting community to define specific lights as autonomous cars are already entering traffic.
