Continental have developed a method of making today’s wide A-pillars virtually transparent, to help remove forward blind spots.
A vehicle’s A-pillars anchor the windshield and the front of the vehicle’s roof. They’ve been growing fatter in response to increasingly stringent rollover roof-crush standards, notably in the North American markets. But as A-pillars grow thicker, they make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians, bicyclists, and even other cars.
Continental have created “a solution that eliminates the forward blind spots of the A-pillars, helping to reduce a critical safety hazard”, said Dr. Karsten Michels, head of Systems & Technology in the Interior division at Continental. Continental’s Virtual A-Pillar is designed to address the growing problem.
