Hella are showing off their latest generation of radar technology in a new online video called The Art of Sight.
The centrepiece of the new range of sensors in development is the Radar System Chip, based on RF-CMOS technology. Its architecture allows to integrate signal function blocks and self-diagnosis features in one single chip, thus reducing malfunctions and information loss which can occur with discrete components. The self-diagnostics also monitor all functions in full and real time, an important prerequisite for highly automated driving. The compact design offers new possibilities for integration, such as in the side of the vehicle, to enable a 360° environment detection for identification of cars, bicyclists, pedestrians, and other moving objects all around the vehicle.
Hella also reveal in the film how driver assistance functions might work in highly automated vehicles. For example, their Enhanced Blind Spot Detection is shown detecting objects approaching from the rear and tracking them as they move to the front of the equipped vehicle. Another function is the Intersection Assistant, which provides an overview when entering a junction and automatically engaging the brakes when right-of-way is breached by crossing vehicles.
