Iteris’ active safety ‘machine vision’ technology will power a new consumer product that addresses a leading cause of highway fatalities: unintended vehicle lane changes due to driver distraction. The system has been developed in partnership with Audiovox Electronics, a leading maker of aftermarket systems. The new system will provide consumers with an opportunity to benefit from safety features that have previously only been available on new premium cars or commercial Class 8 trucks.
The product incorporates Iteris’ proven AutoVue LDW and FCW systems that were originally developed for the OEM market. The small, integrated unit consists of a camera and an onboard computer controlled by image recognition software and proprietary algorithms. The LDW function provides an audible warning if the driver crosses over the lane markings without engaging the turn signal, while the FCW system provides a similar alert when the driver is following too close to the vehicle ahead, or when closing speed is likely to cause a collision. The Audiovox-branded system is expected to be available later in the year and will cost approximately US$600 installed.
