Intermap Technologies will collaborate with Hella to devise a predictive front lighting system based on Intermap’s 3D road geometries.
The partnership will combine Intermap’s high-resolution 3D road geometries with information supplied by an automobile’s onboard camera systems and integrate the composite data into Hella’s front lighting demonstration system. This will provide a substantial increase in visibility for drivers at night and during inclement weather, by automatically directing the headlamp to follow the road before the driver manually steers the vehicle into a bend or up and down a slope.
Adaptive headlight systems improve visibility on curved roads. According to the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), crashes related to this type of driving account for 4% of American front-to-rear, single-driver, and sideswipe-same-direction crashes—about 143,000 of them each year. IIHS say adaptive headlight systems could help reduce the number of fatal crashes in America from the present annual rate of about 2,500.
