Frederique Le Greves, a spokeswoman for Renault in Paris, says any agreement between Renault and Penske would be a uniquely Renault deal and would not involve Renault’s global partner Nissan. She did not say whether Saturn-badged Renaults might be built in Europe, Brazil or Korea.
Penske’s acquisition does not include any manufacturing resources, so he must arrange to buy vehicles from other automakers.
LeGreves said Renault’s proposed role would be simply as a vehicle supplier “in a purely OEM deal.”
Renault and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has used the phrase “OEM deal” to describe selling cars to competitors with no long-term strings attached. For example, Nissan have an OEM deal in North America to provide Chrysler Group with the Nissan Tiida small car for sale by Chrysler in South America.
