The U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers’ Lighting Committee met recently in Orlando, Florida. The industry downturn reduced attendance to a bare fifth of its historical high level of over 100 participants, but a great deal was nevertheless accomplished.
Updates to numerous lighting-related SAE technical standards were begun and completed. Detailed progress reports were given by GTB chairman Geoffrey Draper, GRE chairman Marcin Gorzkowski, and there was a high-content presentation on headlamp performance evaluation and the role of the low beam in pedestrian avoidance. Other significant discussions involved ongoing harmonisation efforts, and the state of the relationship between SAE technical standards and the regulations promulgated by the American NHTSA.
Despite the reduced attendance, the meetings were productive and optimistic. Watch DrivingVisionNews in the next few weeks for more specific details on the topics covered at these meetings.
