The new regulations call for mandatory integration of Electronic stability control (ESC), advanced emergency braking (AEBS), and lane departure warning systems (LDWS) for certain classes of vehicles.
Lane departure warning system has been made a compulsory installation for trucks. However, the commission reserves the right to introduce the regulation in other vehicle categories if found feasible. All the regulations will come into effect from 1 November 2011, which is a year earlier than the commission proposed.
Safety content is likely to increase in vehicles. The proposed regulations come as a boon to the automotive suppliers amidst decreasing vehicle sales. Leading safety content suppliers like TRW, Continental and Lear are expected to benefit from the regulations.
