Osram and Continental have successfully concluded negotiations on their new joint venture, Osram Continental GmbH. The two parent companies each hold a 50% stake, and hope to combine their expertise in lighting, lighting control, and electronics. The JV is slated to start work in the second half of this year, once all necessary regulatory approvals have been granted.
Osram Specialty Lighting CEO Hans-Joachim Schwabe, at left in this picture with Continental’s Head of Body & Security Andreas Wolf, says “Digitalisation opens up new application possibilities in the automotive lighting sector and thus great opportunities that we are sharing with Continental. Together, we will be better able to drive innovation by working closely with the automotive industry to seamlessly integrate light, sensors and electronics into one application. New intelligent lighting functions, such as the combination of light and sensor technology in one module or light-based communication between the driver, other road users and the environment, can thus be advanced”.
The JV will operate globally with headquarters in the Munich region to ensure rapid development cycles with local customers. The product portfolio will include semiconductor-based light modules, such as LED modules for front and rear lights, as well as laser modules and lighting control units.
