Huawei’s new Xpixel module – showcased at the 2026 Beijing International Auto Show – is a million-pixel, full-colour intelligent RGB LED vehicle lighting module which offers a wide colour gamut of up to 125 per cent of the HD TV standard.
The module is slated to enter mass production on 30 August 2026, and will first be applied in Aito’s new M9. Its core feature is the ability to simultaneously project high-definition images onto walls and the ground, enabling interactive dual-scene projection. A single module consumes less than 90 watts, and has a 14° × 7° field of view. Simultaneous projection onto walls and the ground is achieved by adjusting the height via a tuneable lens in front of the main lens.
Beyond basic illumination, the module integrates innovative applications: interactive welcome lighting, large-screen projection, and freehand drawing. As the vehicle approaches, it can project custom patterns on the ground to create a ceremonial ambiance. In narrow passages, the ‘width-indicating light carpet’ function can project a light strip matching the vehicle’s width to assist driving judgement.
This intelligent lighting system integrates deeply with Huawei’s HarmonyOS cockpit, transforming the exterior space into a mobile cinema or gaming arena. It supports projection of screens over 2.5 metres (100 inches), for immersive entertainment experiences. The colour adjustment function receives signals from the vehicle’s perception system and strictly complies with the projection chromaticity requirements specified in the Chinese GB4599-2024 standard.
DVN comment: With RGB LEDs, Huawei can adapt the colourimetry of the light. In rain, snow, or fog, the colour temperature can be adjusted to increase visibility. Likewise, on wet roads a warmer colour can be provided in the relevant parts of the beam to reduce glare for oncoming drivers.
