The US National Academy of Sciences’ Transportation Research Board’s Visibility and Vehicle User Characteristics Committees will hold a human factors workshop on adaptive roadway and vehicle lighting.
The all-day workshop on Sunday 12 January, an adjunct to the TRB’s 93 rd Annual Meeting in Washington, DC from 12-16 January, is entitled “Let There Be Light-But When and Where?”. Moderators will be John Bullough of the RPI Lighting Research Center and Ronald Gibbons of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.

This workshop will focus on the benefits and challenges of dynamic, interactive, intelligent and adaptive roadway and vehicle lighting. Half of the session will be focused on adaptive roadway lighting, and half on adaptive vehicle lighting. The workshop will include brief presentations on the technologies, standards and existing research related to adaptive lighting, followed by breakout groups to identify research gaps, technological needs, and issues related to practical standards and recommended practices.
