At DVN we are receiving a lot of requests on our contact email address. From companies interested in the vehicle lighting business and from people looking for a job, yes, but also from news media. Most of the time, they want to talk about glare, and they are from the U.S. and Canada. We receive around one media request per week on this topic. Indeed, Daniel Stern – see his article in this newsletter – has been doing a lot of interviews about glare concern from public. This is also something we see in mainstream media in Europe, especially in the UK.
In Munich, at a media & vehicle design event, we talked about glare. Gentex presented a solution to reduce driver glare with a new sunvisor technology (shown above and described in this newsletter).
It is for me a bit like the automatic-levelling story: nobody really cared about it before it became a legal constraint. We see in this field a lot of innovations, including MEMS, software, and other ways to replace the traditional height sensor. Regulation is pushing innovation. I think glare is similar: because everybody is talking about glare, it seems innovation is coming to solve the issue.
That is why, to prepare this week’s newsletter, I dove in and read the status of the glare discussions at GRE – all documents are open to the public on the UNECE website – to see what has been highlighted as causes and possible solutions.
Sincerely yours,
