The forthcoming new Acura RLX, replacing the previous RL model, has LED headlamps with a new TIR optical technique. The optics was developed by Light Prescriptions Innovators of Altadena, California, USA, in cooperation with Japan’s Stanley Electric. Each “Jewel-Eye™” headlamp has five stacked dual “RXI™” optical components, each focused and aimed to contribute a part of the beam pattern. The light from the emitter travels a folded path through its optic, reducing the overall packaging depth. LPI developed proprietary software especially for Stanley for this project, and manufacturing is done by Stanley.
Dr. Ruben Mohedano Arroyo, General Manager of LPI Europe, says the headlamps give a very even pattern, and that the beam spread, the amount of flux on the road, and the beam peak intensity and location are all “superb”.
Acura have posted a short promotional video featuring the headlamps.
