SemiLEDs will spend US$96m on a new plant in Foshan, Guangdong, China. The U.S.-based company anticipate production capacity of 20 million power LED chips per month once the new facility is up and running.
The new plant is to be developed in three stages, and full-scale production is expected to commence by October 2010. Early production capacity will be 20 million 1mm x 1mm LED chips per month. Investment and production are expected to triple within three years.
This is not SemiLEDs’ first international plant; last July, they opened a third production facility in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan, which the company said would bring its capacity for 1x1mm high-power LED chips to 15 million per month.
