A progress report from Geoff Draper
Early last month in a DVN weekly newsletter, I set out the plan to develop an initial proposal to be presented to the GRE Informal Working Group (IWG-SLR) at its 20th session, now scheduled for 4–6 October in Brussels. At this session it is expected that work will start on Stage 2 of the simplification of the UN Regulations with a synchronised activity in China to simplify that country’s GB standards.
GRE IWG-SLR held its 17th session in Tokyo, hosted by JASIC on 16-18 May. Great progress was made toward the delivery of the Stage 1 simplification in the form of three new UN regulations to replace the existing 31 UN device regulations. These three new regulations (Road Illuminating Devices, Light Signalling Devices and Retro Reflective Devices) will be delivered at the end of July for formal examination at the 78th GRE session in October 2017. The Tokyo meeting was chaired by Aleksander Lazarevic of the European Commission (Vice-Chair of GRE IWG-SLR) with Davide Puglisi, GTB Executive Secretary, acting as IWG-SLR secretary. Along with the representatives of the GRE contracting parties a huge commitment from the experts of GTB, CLEPA and OICA is providing the technical input.
