Audi remains the most beloved employer among engineering students at German universities. These findings were released today by the Trendence* consulting company. Audi repeated their 2008 triumph in the eyes of budding engineers.
Newport Corporation have introduced the LABasix SA2 series of low-cost aluminum breadboards for basic photonic research and OEM optical assemblies. The new, solid aluminum breadboards, machined from 0.5-inc.-thick 6061 aluminum, provide a stable yet lightweight platform for optical components and subassemblies.
Over 40% of the vehicles tested by TÜV NORD had faulty lighting systems. Four years ago it was only 28%. Improperly-aimed headlamps and defective lighting systems are becoming more prevalent on the roads.
Automakers generally develop their future product designs in secrecy, but General Motors recently unveiled a Website to open their design studios to the public. Visitors will find projects by GM’s advanced design team.
Com-Corp Industries, INC. (CCI), are a Tier-2 supplier of stamping components and assemblies in North America. Known largely as experts in deep-draw metallic components, CCI are expanding their product offerings to include stamped optical reflectors for automotive and solar power applications.
CCI’s technical centre, Isatec, has utilized finite element modeling to enhance product development efficiency. Isatec’s developments include sheetforming simulations, 3D simulations of cosmetic appearance, and improved finite element analysis for random vibration fatigue. These techniques were originally developed to improve light shield design and development. That work—presented at ISAL 2007—was applied in the development of a stamped reflector for a halogen fog lamp which is currently in production.
FEA is used in combination with material and process data gathered over 5 years to create a robust forming process for reflector components. The result is a component with the requisite dimensional stability equivalent to more costly die castings.
Isatec also provides a patented method of using strain analysis to predict surface morphology providing three dimensional models of surface reflectivity. Considerable research and development has also been aimed at addressing the shape setting of the reflector.
Volkswagen have agreed to buy a 42% stake in the sports car unit of debt-ridden Porsche, another step toward combining the two German carmakers into a European automotive giant.
Auto sales in China reached 1.08 million units in July, up 63% over the same period last year, driven by economic recovery, government policy, and strong demand. The so-called low season was performing well
