GTB’s have just completed their week-long session in Vienna, hosted by the Austrian Delegation, and the increasing participation trend is continuing. Eighteen of the nineteen GTB member delegations participated with a resulting participation of more than 60 experts including those from new members China and Taiwan.

After the intense activity of recent years to develop proposals to adapt the UN regulations to handle new technologies appropriately, the agenda of this session resulted in only four proposals for amendment that will be passed to GRE for their March 2014 session. This is typical of the cyclical nature of the work of GTB that provides an opportunity for the Committee of Experts and its working groups to focus on developing a vision and work plan for the next busy cycle that will surely be starting soon in view of the new technologies under development that DVN has already highlighted in its reports of recent conferences such as ISAL.
The main items discussed in relation to the GTB vision and work-plan were:
• How to anticipate regulatory challenges that will be presented by the new technologies such as laser headlamps, matrix beams, next-generation driver assistance and adaptive systems, OLEDs, etc.
DVN has reported on several occasions on the effort at an American university to devise headlamps that specifically don’t illuminate bits of precipitation in the driver’s sight line.
