During the 2010s, we saw ambient lighting changing from monochrome solutions to multicolour with the development of RGB LED technology. The first applications were limited to static scenarios with 4-10 different colours drivers could select from controls on the dashboard. LIN communication was enough; a central ECU sent 4 to 10 different configurations, and the LED IC registered bin information, colour matching, and the five CIE X/Y colour coordinates.

Now, complexity has drastically increased to include interior lighting as a primary main user-interaction touchpoint in the user experience. Lighting displays additional information like voice control, turn indicator feedback, and charging status, and interacts with other car features as a new display.
Most new cars, including A- and B-segment vehicles, have multiple RGB modules for interior lighting.

In this report, our technical experts Jean-Paul Ravier, Thomas Fröhlich and Paul-Henri Matha took time to exchange with LED maker, LED IC maker and market insight companies (S&P Global Mobility and Trenforce) to provide this extensive report about RGB led and RGB LED IC market.
In addition, Robert Striedieck, Senior Interior Designer, made an exhaustive report about how OEM are handling interior lighting.
