Car manufacturers are developing new highly designed, high-performance headlight systems with efficient, durable LED technology.
The auto industry has therefore developed new LED headlights, which should provide a better efficacy and an intelligent distribution for more visibility and more safety.
“The future obviously belongs to LED technology for headlights,” says Prof. Tran Quoc Khanh, head of the lighting department at the Technical University of Darmstadt.
“You give the driver the best possible light whatever the driving situation.” To clarify the subject, Prof. Khanh distinguishes two different strategic axes of research for LED technology in the automotive industry:
The first one, following the way Xenon headlamps have been marketed, consists in offering LED lights as a standard or as an optional Headlight in the luxury class vehicles. With LED technology, the drivers will get the same benefits as they had been accustomed with Xenon headlamps with a lot more styling options, explains the professor.
The second strategic approach to LED lighting is to interconnect Lighting with Driver Assistance systems.”
Car makers are moving to LED technologies.
Almost all car makers have introduced LED lights, at least for the DRL, as options or even offered as a retrofit solution. But when considering headlights, Lexus and Audi are the first to have launched LEDs in a big way for the main headlights, promoting the economical and long lasting LED’s through their Premium car models.
The R8 sports car and the A8 luxury saloon were among the first production models which request no more light bulbs in front and rear lights.
As of October 1, 2010, Aldo Kamper (40), a proven LED expert and time-tested executive, is succeeding Dr. Rüdiger Müller (65)
