New Tech Could Stop Drink-Driving
U.S. Government officials have given a tentative thumbs up to a new technology for cars that would render the concept of driving while drunk a non-starter—literally.

What features does a safety system need to be able to recognise the sudden appearance of a hazard and initiate active assistance measures, such as steering and braking intervention?
The Renault-Nissan alliance had a record year with 7,276,398 units sold in 2010, a 10.3% share of the 2010 global market and a 19.6% increase over 2009 in a market that expanded by 11.8%.
China’s top automaker and VW and GM partner SAIC say their net profit for 2010 increased more than 100% on strong car sales.
Renault will invest €5.7bn in their industrial sites between 2010 and 2013. The investment will have particular focus on production in Europe and away from home in Brazil,
Introduction
To improve safety of modern cars through better headlight systems performance, there are currently four large potential research fields:
Field 1: Xenon headlights , LED headlamps and the optimal light emission of headlamps (lateral light distribution, higher illuminance of the area directly under the HV-point…).
Field 2: Adaptive Headlights (adapted to various traffic conditions: city traffic, country road, highway, static and dynamic bending, cornering light function, automatic low/high beam switching).
Field 3: Headlight cleaning systems- dynamic leveling systems.
Field 4: Intelligent light systems , longitudinal light distribution, Marker light, glare free systems.
Field 1 has already been the subject of systematic studies through various physiological research programs (TU Darmstadt 1997-2008, LRC/USA and UMTRI/USA) and traffic safety analytical studies (TÜV 2007, GIDAS), whereas the fields 2, 3, and 4, although partly covered, have never been systematically analysed, leaving important questions pending. If we try to be more systematic, we would welcome in these different fields following studies:
Field 2: Adaptive headlights
Possible comprehensive studies should include following three aspects:
1. Literature research covering results of previous studies: where did they come to conclusive findings, what are the potential subjects where there are still open questions. This literature research should not be limited to national studies but should be international.
2 . Physiological and psychophysical inquiries with the questions:
– Can we and how can be the benefits of adaptive Light systems quantitatively compared to conventional Light systems (Xenon and halogen bulbs).
We will come back next week on some of the content of GTB working session held last week.
Meanwhile, a major step toward to modernisation of GTB was taken in Turin, Italy on 26 January with the signing of a new statute that redefines the operating structure of GTB.
Volkswagen Group Design Director Walter De’ Silva says the German automaker’s attention to detail is so extreme that their production cars look even better than their styling models.
The deadline for abstract submission is 30 May, and the notifications of acceptance will be sent by 30 June. The congress will be held 12-14 September at GM’s
